Chef Paul Mattison's Garden and Educational Program for Phillippi Shores Elementary in Sarasota, Florida
Chef Paul Mattison’s efforts over last year to create a sustainable student garden are coming to fruition tomorrow, Wednesday, November 6, 2013 from 8:30am at Phillippi Shores Elementary, 4747 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, Florida, 34231 as 40 hand made Earth Boxes created by Chef Paul Mattison, executive chef and Proprietor of Mattison’s, and his team are filled with 20 cubic yards or one dump truck of earth and compost to get the gardening project started.
Since May 2012, Chef Paul Mattison leads the effort to create a sustainable garden at Phillippi Shores Elementary School which eventually involves the students learning, hands-on, about gardening, composting, nutrition, meal planning, and cooking. Chef Paul Mattison first participated in the “Chefs Move to Schools” fundraising initiative, and has since rallied a group of parents, teachers, students, community businesses, and Mattison’s staff to volunteer in the crafting of the boxes, the irrigation, the planning, and tomorrow the filling of the earth boxes. Chef Paul Mattison provided the initial funding for the garden project with donations and other forms of sponsorship from the local community including Lowes Home Improvement and the Crosley Museum and Nature Center’s Jeff Scarborough along with countless parents, staff, and students from Phillippi Shores Elementary School.
Those planning to attend and volunteer should bring a shovel or rake and check in at the office at Phillippi Shores Elementary before 8:30am. The boxes are located on campus behind the pavilion.
